What does your role involve?
The primary purpose of my role is to provide support at all Peterson sites across the Caribbean region, ensuring that all operations are carried out in compliance with Peterson HSE management systems. I also provide coaching to help build safety awareness and provide guidance on the regulations of the Guyana Occupational Health and Safety Act 1997, and all other laws related to the health, safety and welfare of employees, visitors and other persons as well as the environment.
How has your career progressed to where you are now?
I was first introduced to HSE, or Occupational Health and Safety as it is known in Guyana, when I worked in a Microbiology laboratory as an Analytical Technical Officer. I took a keen interest in this career path, so decided to attend a two-week certificate course at the University of Guyana. On completion of the course, I began my first role as a Safety Representative.
I later decided to further my studies and was admitted to the University of Guyana to pursue a diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. Following this, I worked as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer, where I was responsible for over 500 employees across five regions. This allowed me to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience in all aspects of the safety management system.
In 2019, I completed the NEBOSH International General Certificate, before joining Peterson in my current role as HSE Coach.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been many great moments throughout my career, however I would have to say working for Peterson, a leading international energy logistics provider, has been the highlight. Seeing the information management systems that are in place and how they are easily made accessible to staff in all parts of the world is impressive and something I look forward to seeing become more established in my own country, Guyana.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the daily interactions with colleagues from all levels. It is great to be able to share and receive knowledge that can make a difference in so many lives on so many levels.
What is something you are passionate about?
I am passionate about caring for others. We have all been placed where we are for a reason and we all have the same end goal. Though everyone has a different path to take on the journey, it does not prevent us from caring, respecting and helping each other.
