We are pleased to share Tom van der Meulen’s career story with Peterson. Tom recently relocated to our office in Qatar as Business Development Manager for the Middle East to help expand our business offering in the region. He discusses his career progression, the projects he has found most interesting so far and his advice for others considering a similar career path.
What are your main responsibilities?
Currently, my role is focused on growing our business and presence in Qatar and the Middle East region. My main responsibilities range from carrying out market studies to delivering projects and consultancy to our clients. Our extensive knowledge and experience in energy logistics, inspections and certifications delivered in partnership with Control Union can really add value in the region.
How has your career progressed to where you are now?
I originally joined Peterson Control Union as a Management Trainee, before being promoted to Quality Coordinator in our Rotterdam office. Most recently, I relocated to Qatar to begin my new role as Business Development Manager within Peterson Energy Logistics. I believe that we as Peterson are quite unique. Foremost because we are a big company that still feels like one intimate family, and secondly because of the freedom and entrepreneurship that our company allows. I am thankful for the way my career has progressed and all that it has brought me.
What projects have you worked on throughout your career that have been particularly interesting?
When I first joined Peterson Control Union in 2014, I was tasked with exploring the fruit and vegetable industry. This was an assignment I really enjoyed, which later turned into a business unit within the company – fruit and vegetable inspections. Currently, we are working on some exciting projects in Qatar related to sustainability and energy such as the sharing of vessels. These are topics where my educational expertise lies and is something that I am very passionate about. I hope that we can share more about these projects soon.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Building something from scratch and stepping into the unknown is what I enjoy most. Combining this with doing something that is good for us and our planet; that’s my personal sweet spot.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering a similar role?
My advice would be to take matters in your own hands and don’t be afraid. Learn to fall and be honest in what you want and what you do.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about nature and the environment. As I grew up near the ocean in the Netherlands, I have a special connection with the sea. I love to be on or in the water. My all-time hero is Jacque Cousteau, which might not come as a surprise.
