We are pleased to share Reinald Schram’s career story with Peterson. Reinald discusses his career progression to Assistant Manager of Peterson’s Chemicals Division, shares some of the key projects he has worked on and offers advice for others who are considering a similar role.
What are your main responsibilities?
In a nutshell, I am responsible for the daily operational management of Peterson’s Chemicals Division. This includes maintaining customer and supplier relationships; devising and developing projects that contribute to the quality, safety and efficiency; and developing business models to improve and expand our services. It is also my job to ensure the work we do complies with all necessary laws and regulations, and to provide guidance and support to my team members.
How has your career progressed to where you are now?
I was officially employed by Peterson’s Chemicals Division on 1st January 2010, starting as an Administrative Assistant. I quickly realised that I had an affinity with our work and all aspects that come with it. After three years, I became a Planner and Coordinator and soon after, Peterson trusted me to become a Team Leader. In 2016, I was promoted to Assistant Manager to provide business management support in addition to my operational responsibilities.
What projects have you worked on throughout your career that have been particularly interesting?
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to play a role in many different projects. For example, I helped to devise, prepare and realise an entirely new storage facility for hazardous waste, and I was involved in the full digitisation of our administration related documentation.
More recently, I worked on the creation of a new all-in business model to expand our services and further unburden our customers. I also helped to transition our folder structure to Microsoft Teams to maintain and improve collaboration within our team during the COVID-19 crisis.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I like most about my job is the freedom that I have to put ideas into practise. Being able to see the development and realisation of projects has a positive impact on our team and helps to develop our relationship with customers which gives me satisfaction.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering a similar role?
Always think outside the box and look for improvements – no matter how big or small they are, they all contribute. I believe that there is no time when you are ‘finished’ – there is always room for innovation. Share your knowledge with your colleagues, involve them in everything you do and challenge them to contribute. You must do it as a team.
Do you have a quote that helps to motivate you or a person that inspires you?
There is one quote that has stuck with me, and I really believe it to be the key for a successful business – ‘If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers’.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my personal time, I enjoy immersing myself in the latest information and techniques that may be of added value to our company. I also enjoy running, watching series or movies, doing different jobs around the house, and spending time with my family and friends.
