People profile: Siobhan Shewan

Our Shared Service Centre Manager, Siobhan Shewan, shares her career story discussing her background in the industry, areas of specialism and the importance of remaining calm under pressure.

What does your role involve?

I lead the Shared Service Centre (SSC) teams in the UK and the Netherlands and am responsible for the accounts receivable, accounts payable, credit control and treasury functions.

How long have you worked in energy logistics?

I have worked in energy logistics for slightly over three years since I first joined Peterson. Prior to that, I worked in the higher education sector.

Do you have any particular areas of specialism?

My background is in finance, so I have some highly interesting specialities such as budgeting, forecasting and producing management accounts. I enjoy the aspect of my role where I am closely involved from both an SSC and finance user perspective with implementations and improvements to our main ERP system, as well as the variety of other IT systems used by the business.

What skills have you found to be vital to your role?

Remaining calm under pressure is definitely important – often there are competing deadlines and objectives to be met, so a calm, problem-solving mindset is required. Being an effective communicator is another essential skill as my role involves interaction with both internal and external stakeholders, and I enjoy bringing structure and direction to the teams I lead.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Being given the opportunity to move into this industry with Peterson was a major highlight for me. In terms of personal development, the move has been a learning curve with the teams in finance, SSC and operations supporting me and providing me with the knowledge to progress my career.

Do you have any goals that you would like to achieve in the next few years?

As anyone who has spoken to me in the last eight months would know, my number one goal right now is to be able to go on holiday! Career-wise – being new to the SSC role, I’m looking to have a positive impact on the teams, both through supporting individuals and streamlining processes to make the best use of technology. Short term – having the opportunity to see everyone face to face would be wonderful (particularly the team in the Netherlands as we have yet to meet in person!).
