What does your role involve?
My role involves the management of the Customs and Agency Department. I am tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that activities are done in accordance with our standard operating procedures (SOPs), in a safe and timely manner.
When the department was first created, I was the only coordinator. In recent times the team has grown significantly and continues to fill the demands of custom, agency and immigration in Guyana. With a full team my role has been expanded to leading and guiding the team while being directly involved in the daily operations and coordination activities.
How long have you worked in the oil and gas industry?
I have been working in the oil and gas industry for the past two years.
Do you have any particular areas of specialism?
I have a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) but my strength is in coordination & communication.
What skills have you found to be vital to your role?
Planning, strategizing and communication are vital. In the Customs and Agency Department, there is no room for error. A simple delay in a shipment or vessel can decrease productivity, downtime and inadvertently result in unnecessary expenses for the operations. Meticulous planning is needed in our line of work. This includes well-outlined strategies, ensuring that safety protocols are followed and ensuring clear communication to all stakeholders involved.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
The highlight of my career in the oil and gas industry was when I was involved in my second vessel clearance. With limited knowledge from my first load out it seemed overwhelming but I studied the processes thoroughly thereafter and was able to successfully coordinate all activities to clear the second vessel, one week later without any delay.
What is something you are passionate about?
I am passionate about coordination as it is a satisfying experience when a job is done according to plan.
