People profile: Ryan Hemraj

Guyana-based Operations Manager, Ryan Hemraj, with eloquence and a smooth sense of humour shares with us his Peterson career story and personal goals. Read why he desires to remain delivery-focused along with invaluable advice for someone in his role.

What are your main responsibilities?

As safety is our top priority, one of my primary responsibilities as the Operations Manager is to ensure we utilize resources optimally for safe and efficient operations. I also work closely with other key members of the team to manage operational finances for profitability of our clients while leading our Guyana team to meet objectives.

How has your career progressed to where you are now?

My professional career initiated as a teenager in the banking sector with an international financial institution where I acquired general knowledge in financial analysis. Then I was successful in an operational leadership role with a global group of companies which allowed me practical experience in human resources, procurement, training, development and accounting. Finally, I was selected for a senior Logistics and Coordination role with a local Shorebase company where I learned about the new Guyanese oil and gas industry.

What projects have you worked on throughout your career that have been particularly interesting?

Being integrally involved in the initialization of the very first Shorebase facility was a rewarding experience. It presented its own unique challenges, promoted a high-level safety culture and introduced specialized equipment never before seen locally. Being the first time our country was involved in this industry, there was understandably immense attention placed on our performance and ability to execute, so our success afforded a great sense of accomplishment and pride in witnessing such an evolution of our team.

What skills have you found to be vital to your role?

Being results-focused and detail-oriented are crucial, especially when involved with Peterson Guyana Inc., a charismatic company in a dynamic industry. Also, both generally and professionally, humility is a trait I strive for daily since it has taught me valuable life lessons in the past.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a similar role?

Remain committed to understanding every operational area and their roles in keeping the wheel turning. Be not fearful, rather welcoming, of new challenges for they present valuable opportunities for the growth of you and your team.

Do you have any goals that you would like to achieve in the next few years?

Professionally, I would be thrilled to declare our team as the region’s front-runners in Logistics coordination for it will help us and our clients to thrive together. Though I envisage challenges along this road given our infancy to the local market, I know it is achievable.

Personally, I still want to believe that I have an outside chance of representing the West Indies in international cricket. My plan is to turn up at the venues in the mornings with my gear and hope for a last-minute player dropout so that I may get the call-up.

I guess the professional goal is more realistic, so that’s where my focus will be.
