People profile: Jaye Deighton

Jaye Deighton, Projects and Innovation Director, shares her Peterson career story with us. She discusses her core responsibilities, upcoming projects and the importance of innovation in the energy transition.

 

How has your career progressed to where you are now?

My journey into technology wasn’t straightforward. I actually started in architecture but completed my first year of university and decided it wasn’t for me. I then went on to study business management, which helped me to look at technology and innovation from the business problem out. After graduating, I began working as a receptionist at an IT company. The company was a client of Peterson’s and during my time there, I worked alongside our current CEO, Sarah Moore. Sarah then went on to set up Core29 and I joined her a year later. We have worked together with the team to evolve Core29 over the last ten years, applying innovation to digitally transform our clients’ businesses.

My involvement with Peterson came quite early on in the lifecycle of Core29 – Peterson was one of our customers and I was brought in to help with a Business Management System (BMS) project.  I worked as Programme Manager for the next seven years, working with Peterson to develop our Lighthouse suite of technology solutions. This involved deploying the software internationally and working on customer integrations and consultancy projects. Towards the end of last year, I was given the opportunity to move into the role of Projects and Innovation Director within Peterson, and I began my new role at the beginning of 2022.


What are your main responsibilities in your role as Projects and Innovations Director?

I see my role as having two main components – there’s the more tangible element which is our Lighthouse technology offering and taking that to the next stage of its lifecycle. It’s been growing for ten years and we’ve done a lot of work to build a strong foundation for an industry-leading product. Now, it’s about looking at automation, machine learning and artificial intelligence and incorporating these technologies to enhance Lighthouse further and provide additional value for both Peterson and our customers.

There’s also the wider part of my role, which involves working across the business to identify more innovative ways of working and bringing in best practices from other industries that we can adapt to our industry. My aim is to ensure a culture of innovation is fully embedded within Peterson to encourage our people globally to think differently and give everyone the opportunity to come forward with new ideas.

Are there any projects you are particularly excited to work on?

There’s one project where we’re investigating how we can use machine learning technology in our transport process. We are working on an algorithm which incorporates allocations, routing, sustainability and reducing carbon emissions to help increase efficiency. So that’s a project I’m really looking forward to – it’s an exciting one.

I’m also looking forward to evolving Lighthouse into its next phase. It’s about taking it back to basics and understanding our customers’ needs. We’ve got the systems in place to create a vast amount of data and we need to ensure the relevant information is available to our customers as required. I’m looking forward to working more closely with Peterson customers to understand how we can shape what we’re doing to help them achieve their innovation initiatives as well as continuing to work with the user community to understand opportunities for improvement or new features. The most valuable suggestions come from the people doing the role – this is one of the biggest differentiators that makes Lighthouse a credible solution in the market.

What is the importance of innovation in the energy transition?

It’s massive. As an industry, we’re all working together to try to figure out how to achieve the energy transition and the data within our systems can tell us so much. It can help us to scenario plan and understand the impact of decisions that are being made. Innovation also allows us to measure the journey we’re on and monitor the progress we’re making. It’s important that we continue to innovate and bring in the right technology to allow us to adapt and progress further towards our net zero goals and beyond.
